People, dogs, and their special connection
SARAH LUGER, Published on August 2019
Did you know that August 26th is National Dog Day in the US? Well, it is. And that’s a really good reason to talk about our favorite pet: the dog. In many cultures, we say that “dogs are a man’s best friend.” We don’t think about it a lot, but dogs are a big part of our society. Different types of dogs help humans in many ways. They can be a big help to farmers, police, and even people with disabilities.
How did we come to have this special relationship with dogs? Where do dogs come from? How did it all start? To answer these questions, we have to take a look at history. Dogs as we know them used to be very different. In fact, dogs came from wolves. At some point, many years ago, humans started to domesticatewild wolves. Early humans wanted animals to help them with different things. Dogs could help guard their homes, hunt wild animals, carry, pull and push things. Thanks to their natural qualities and instincts, dogs were great at doing these jobs. Dogs also did other helpful things, like clean up, and even help keep people warm when it’s cold outside. Whenever humans and dogs worked and lived together, there was a higher chance that people would stay alive. Animals in the wild have more freedom, but animals that work with humans get food and a home. They also usually live longer. This is a pretty good deal for both dogs and humans, don’t you think?
It is believed that humans domesticated dogs in a few ways. One way was by adopting wolf puppies who didn’t have a family. The younger they were, the better they were at becoming a part of human Society The adopted wolves would breed with each other. With each new generation, their puppies would have an even better connection and relationship with humans.
Another way happened naturally. Wolves would go around places where humans lived. They did it because that way, they could get to any food the humans may have left behind. The wolves that got along better with humans would have puppies that could do the same thing. Because of this, it would be easier and easier to domesticate the newer generations.
People bred dogs with qualities that were useful for humans. Since dogs have many different qualities that can be helpful, people could breed different kinds of dogs to do different things. If you have a male and female dog with different qualities, and want all of those qualities in one dog, you could make puppies that have both parents’ qualities. This created many new kinds of dogs.
Today, we keep many kinds of animals as pets, but the animals we feel closest to are dogs (sorry, cat lovers)! Many people who have Pet dogs, see them as an important part of the family. Dogs have been a very important and very special part of human life. A world without dogs would be a less happy place. To dogs, we want to tell you something: even though we hate cleaning up after you, thank you for everything. You really are our best friends!
